FABA Awards and Scholarships

Nominations will be accepted for the 2024 year beginning July 2024.  All nominations must be received annually by August 7th (by 11:59 PM) to be considered for the upcoming annual conference. Honorees will be notified by September 1st.

Please review the description below of each award.  It is highly suggested that you type your award nomination details into a Word or Pages document in order to easily complete the required fields in the online nomination form.  For research awards* (Sustainable World and Skinner Foundation), all required materials are required at the time of submission.  Faculty letters of support must be emailed within 48 hours of the submission to [email protected] identifying the nominated researcher and the award by name in the email or can be uploaded as a file during the nomination process.

The Glenn Latham Scholarship Award
In honor of Glenn Latham, this award is intended to recognize parents, foster parents or direct care staff who have exemplified quality behavioral treatment. It consists of recognition at the annual awards ceremony, plaque, one complimentary registration to FABA, one-night’s hotel room for the night before the awards ceremony, and an invitation to the Awards Luncheon with the FABA Board.
The Cathy Lee Buchanan Behavior Change Success Award
This award will recognize a committed, caring behavior analyst who uses behavior analysis procedures to improve the lives of others. A peer, supervisor, local review committee or local chapter of FABA is encouraged to nominate BCABAs or BCBAs (or CBA’s and CABA’s) who work directly with clients in Florida. The award consists of recognition at the annual awards ceremony, plaque, one complimentary registration to FABA, and an invitation to the Awards Luncheon with the FABA Board.
The Charles Kimber Public Service Award
This award is given for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis in the Community is to recognize those who are having an impact in a whole community through their dedication and commitment to improving the lives of others through the use of behavioral procedures. The award is intended for those establishing programs in a community, consulting or supervising in a number of facilities in a community or otherwise providing behavioral expertise to expand behavioral services in a community. The awardee is not necessarily a behavior analyst but could be another professional who supports behavioral activities and programs. The award consists of recognition at the annual awards ceremony, plaque, one complimentary registration to FABA, and an invitation to the Awards Luncheon with the FABA Board.
The Michael Hemingway and Gerald Shook Public Service Award
This award is bestowed for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis in Florida and intended to recognize behavior analysts or other public officials who are having a significant impact in the state of Florida by their support of behavioral approaches to treatment. The awardee does not necessarily have to be a behavior analyst but rather has to have demonstrated an understanding of what behavior analysts do, and have shown a commitment to the use of high quality behavioral procedures on a large scale. The award consists of recognition at the annual awards ceremony, plaque, one complimentary registration to FABA, and an invitation to the Awards Luncheon with the FABA Board.
The David Niederpruem Memorial Fund
This award was established to honor the impact that Dave Niederpruem made on the lives of his students and the teachers he mentored. In the earlier years of the conference, Dave was known to members of FABA in his unselfish capacity as the audio-visual consultant for nearly a decade.  His involvement with FABA began as a result of his position as a consultant and teacher dedicated to the use of behavior analytic practices for students with academic and behavioral difficulties in school settings. This fund provides a plaque and scholarship in the form of a conference registration to the selected individual who is engaged in the education of students with varying abilities or unique needs in the schools or someone who would benefit by attending the annual conference but would not be able to do so without supplemental assistance. This award is intended for those nominees holding the title of ESE teacher. The award consists of recognition at the annual awards ceremony, plaque, one complimentary registration to FABA, and an invitation to the Awards Luncheon with the FABA Board.
The Jose Martinez-Diaz Memorial Award
This fund was established to honor the memory of a great recruiter to the field of behavior analysis: Dr. Jose Martinez-Diaz. With his passion for the science, and a gregarious personality, Jose drew people into the field, and encouraged those in the field to always reach higher. This award is intended for an RBT, direct care staff, educator, or student/prospective student of behavior analysis that has a passion for the science and practice, and needs assistance to pursue further behavior analytic education (undergraduate or graduate level training in behavior analysis, etc.). Nominations may come from employers or supervisors who have direct contact with the nominee and should consist of a short essay describing their experience with the nominee, as well as why they believe the nominee should receive the award. Eligible individuals include RBTs, direct care staff, or other professionals seeking to begin or further education in behavior analysis. The nominator or nominee must also submit information about how the award will be used (e.g. applied toward graduate coursework). The purpose of the award is to provide funding to be used to being or continue their behavior analytic coursework required for BACB certification through a VCS, attending a state or national behavior analytic conference. 
The B. F. Skinner Foundation Florida Graduate Student Research Award
This research award consists of a $500 grant to assist in funding graduate student-driven research. Applicants must be a current FABA member attending a graduate-level program in Florida. The proposal must be for a student-driven research project, thesis or dissertation approved by their department of study. Applicants do not have to be in a behavior analysis graduate program, but the research must be behavior analytic in nature. Consideration will be given to proposals that describe research with a focus on observable and measurable behavior (or the products thereof) as the dependent variable and the manipulation of well-defined environmental events as independent variables.  Both applied and basic research proposals are encouraged. This award includes a $500 stipend for a one-year (max) study, recognition at the annual awards ceremony, plaque, and an invitation to the Awards Luncheon with the FABA Board. The Behavior Change for a Sustainable World Research Award
Initiated in 2018 by William Heward, this award is meant to support research using behavior analysis concepts and principles to promote sustainable practice and environmentally friendly behavior change.  Any applied, basic, or translational study with a primary goal of increasing understanding of human behavior and environmental preservation/enhancement is eligible for consideration. This award includes a $500 stipend for a one-year (max) study, recognition at the annual awards ceremony, plaque, and an invitation to the Awards Luncheon with the FABA Board. Additionally, the FABA Board of Directors can opt to bestow the following Board Member Nominated awards that symbolize significant dedication to the field and science:

The Charles H. Cox Award for Outstanding Service and the Advancement of Behavior Analysis in Florida is to recognize a behavior analyst who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to the promotion of excellence in behavior analysis in the state of Florida.  The award is not given necessarily given annually, but is reserved as a lifetime achievement award for a behavior analyst who has demonstrated a commitment to the promotion and support of behavior analysis over an extended period of time.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is designed to recognize behavior analysts who have demonstrated their commitment to the field over a lifetime. It is typically given to a prominent behavior analyst.

The Nate Azrin Award for Outstanding Scientific Contributions to the Field of Behavior Analysis is to acknowledge and honor behavior analysts or other individuals who, through scientific research and publication have made significant contributions to the field of behavior analysis.  

Friends of FABA Award is to acknowledge and honor individuals outside the field of behavior analysis who promote the use of behavior analysis.

Legislator of the Year Award is to acknowledge legislators who have been supportive of behavior analysis issues of concern in the Florida Legislature.
